INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL LAW
(LAWE-4040) - 2 UNITS

This course provides students with a nuanced understanding of the legal structure that have shaped international responses to environmental challenges. Spanning from the early environmental treaties of 1972 to the present, where nearly 300 multilateral agreements govern diverse issues like climate change, biodiversity protection, ozone depletion, fisheries management, and more, students will explore the multifaceted landscape of international environmental law. Special focus will be placed on some key treaties such as UNFCCC, Kyoto Protocol, Paris Agreement, Biodiversity Convention, and OSPAR Convention. What principles and norms do these treaties contain? How does international environmental law regulate states', international organizations' and private actors' behavior? What role can international law and international institutions play in addressing environmental problems? Also, examples will be discussed from emerging international jurisprudence to enrich theoretical understanding and encourage the application of concepts to real-world challenges.
