LAW OF DIGITAL MEDIA PLATFORMS: SOCIAL MEDIA, STREAMING AND THE CREATOR ECONOMY

This course will examine the legal and regulatory issues that shape how social media platforms and streaming services market, monetize and distribute content in the digital world. Focusing on the intersection of media, technology and advertising, this course will explore how platforms generate revenue, including through various subscription models and advertising efforts. Students will analyze the legal frameworks governing online advertising and endorsement practices including oversight by the FTC, regulatory requirements such as the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act and First Amendment limitations for commercial speech. Students will also explore case studies showing how legal teams at leading platforms advise on marketing campaigns, creator partnerships, and brand safety issues in real time.
