SEXUAL IDENTITY AND THE LAW
(LAWI-4095) - 2 UNITS

This seminar course will consider sexual orientation and gender identity, with a concentrated focus on intersectionalities with race and socioeconomic status, within a historical and evolving context of the law. We will begin by exploring the evolution of the rights of gays and lesbians, tracking early doctrines of privacy and equality to the law as it stands today. We will also explore ongoing legal battles over religious free exercise and nondiscrimination laws, and the rights of transgender and gender-nonconforming people. Finally, to bring all of the course concepts together, we will examine many issues during the semester through the perspective of transgender women of color.
