JUDICIAL PROCESS FIELD PLACEMENT
(LAWJ-4005) - UNITS

Judicial Process course will cover topics, such as the role of the judicial law clerk; judicial ethics and professional considerations of lawyers and judges working in the judicial branch; the role of precedent and standards of review in decision making; "judicial activism;" the judicial selection process; and the best practices in drafting bench briefs, proposed orders and opinions. The course is designed to complement the judicial externship experience and develop the skills learned in the externship; it will use readings, class discussions, and written and oral exercises to expose judicial externs to doctrine, legal theory, and ethical issues that arise in the state and federal judiciary. Specifically the course participants will be offered multiple opportunities for performance, self-evaluation and feedback on their oral and written work and other professional skills obtained in the judicial externship placement. Classes for Judicial Process meet regularly throughout the semester and are required for all students who are concurrently enrolled in a state or federal judicial externship. Students eligible to enroll in Judicial Process must receive professor approval and be concurrently enrolled in a Judicial Externship. A student may enroll in a judicial externship for the fall and spring semesters from 1 to 10 units and for the summer session from 1 to 6 units.
